Pope Benedict XVI began life as Joseph Alois Ratzinger in X Germany on April 16, 1927, in Martkl am Inn, Germany. Ratzinger joined the Hitler Youth in 1941, but later claimed to have opposed the Nazis, despite the fact that all of their opponents were killed or jailed. Joseph also served in the German army and was captured by American soldiers in 1945, who placed him in a POW camp until the war ended. Joseph Ratzinger then studied to become a Catholic priest. He rose through the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church and finally became its Pope on April 24, 2005.
