Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. He became the first Republican Party member to be elected President in 1860. He received only % of the popular vote, but carried the populous northern "free" states. He is most noted for launching the United States Civil War, or War Between the States. He is usually credited with freeing the slaves, but in fact they were freed after his death by constitutional Amendment XIII (13th). He died in office on April 15, 1865 after being assassinated.
